Take 10 For Your Health
Survey Reveals America’s 10-Minute Break Behaviors

Tulsa, OK (February 19, 2007) – Today, most Americans are so busy multi-tasking that they don’t set aside 10 minutes to break from the hustle and bustle. To remind Americans to take a break for their health and happiness, Nonni’s Biscotti has launched a new initiative called “Take 10.” A partnership with Claire Michaels Wheeler, M.D., Ph.D. will help spread the news about the importance of taking time for yourself each day.

“Research has shown a link between heart disease and stress,” said Dr. Wheeler. “I partnered with Nonni’s Biscotti to launch this campaign because in order to keep your heart healthy, you need to keep your mind healthy. I advise my patients to take a 10-minute break everyday: walk away from their daily tasks, take a deep breath and clear their minds. What better way to take a break than with a low-calorie, all-natural, delicious biscotti paired with your favorite beverage!”

Survey Says
Nonni’s Biscotti wanted to see what Americans thought about taking a 10-minute break, so they conducted a survey to find out when people take breaks and what they do to rest and regroup. The survey found the following:

  • Thirty-six percent of respondents said they felt refreshed after taking a break
  • Forty-two percent of respondents would prefer to take a break with Doctors Shepherd, Yang and company
  • Seventy-six percent of respondents prefer taking a break alone, but many people forget to take a break in the first place.
  • Thirty-four percent of people surf the net or shop online when they take a break; followed closely by reading (24 percent) and taking a nap (21 percent)
  • Forty-four percent of respondents would take a dip in the Bahamas if they owned a teleportation machine; cruising the waterways of Venice (30 percent) came in second.

The Rat Race
Americans today are working longer hours and taking fewer breaks to relax and refocus. A 60-minute lunch break is a big myth to most workers today: According to a recent USA Today article, more than half of workers polled reported eating lunch at their desks while continuing to work1. Even when they do take breaks, most workers make phone calls, run errands and check emails instead of relaxing and enjoying their down time. Longer days at work and busier lives at home, with breaks few and far between, lead to increased stress.

Last year, workplace stress cost American companies an estimated $300 billion in lost productivity, poor performance, absenteeism and health costs2. Stress is not only costly to businesses, but also detrimental to the health of employees. Research has shown that there is a strong link between stress and heart disease.

“We decided to launch a “Take 10” campaign to help remind people that a 10-minute break is enough to help re-charge their batteries and reduce daily stress,” said Matt Duffy, marketing manager for Nonni’s Biscotti. “Our research demonstrates that people prefer to eat biscotti, while taking a break from the day, and enjoy the delicious taste without any distractions.”
